Street Art

On West Dallas, they recently razed some sort of school building and exposed the side of the neighboring body shop. This was already there or new – either way I like it.

Spotted this guy on the way to work a few days ago. It’s very similar to the cupcake stencil I went after that was already painted over a few months ago.

Spied this piece on the way to work and stopped on Friday to snap a shot. It’s just down the street from my office near some new construction. I love dinosaurs and Coolidge’s work, so this is a win-win.

Street Art Denied

Not long after Cristen and I moved into the city we fell into the cupcake craze that was sweeping the nation. We were (and sometimes still are) patrons of Sugarbaby’s, Crave and Sprinkles. Driving home from school a few days ago, I noticed a great stenciled cupcake spray painted on the rail at the Montrose – Allen Parkway intersection. If you live in town you should know the rail I’m describing; it’s covered in stickers, graffiti and the like. When I saw the cupcake, I thought that I would ride past it next time I was on my bike and snap a picture for a Street Art post. I was out riding some errands today and thought I would go by on the way home. Unfortunately, I was too late – the city’s graffiti gestapo had sprayed silver paint over any painted art – all that remained was the various stickers. I am not sure why they don’t paint over the stickers too, maybe they peel and curl eventually? Anyhow, as a consolation prize I snapped a shot of this awesome sticker, whose sentimate I agree with.

One of the things that I wanted to use this blog for is the documentation of street art as I come across it in the city. As some of you may be aware, the City of Houston has a campaign to prevent and destroy street art , so I thought I would try and memorialize what I see before it is gone for good. Since living in the city I have noticed some great street art and was also inspired by the film Exit Through the Gift Shop to appreciate what goes into making these pieces. I may not be an artist myself but I can do my part to recognize street art when I see it and share it with you here.

I also have made a Google Map specifically for the purpose of visiting it on your own. I realize this may point the graffiti gestapo right to some of my favorite pieces but I don’t think I have enough site hits to worry about that yet.

Here is the piece:
